August is here and I am actually shook. Where has the summer gone I feel cheated. I read 18 “books” (on Goodreads) but they make up both novels and novellas. It was an insane reading month and at one point I was reading a book and a half a day. However, this is where it ends – I really don’t want to be reading this much fiction, and I’m going to be focusing more of my time on reading non-fiction or procrastinating reading non-fiction or trying to win (but consistently losing) at Monopoly.

Reviews
Lost Roses by Martha Hall Kelley
The Prodigal Daughter by Jeffrey Archer
Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly
The Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff
Carnegie’s Maid by Marie Benedict
Favourite of the Month
The Prodigal Daughter is by far my favourite of the month. I absolutely loved the combination of politics, business and female badassery. I admired Florentyna’s work ethic and how she built her way to the top. I also enjoyed how the author didn’t seem to have spared much of the details when it came to the technicalities of the business side of this book, and I found it really interesting (and tried my best to understand everything).
Most Disappointing of the Month
Carnegie’s Maid was the most disappointing of the month. It felt like a very bad version of Jane Eyre.
Prettiest Cover
I think we can all agree The Lost Girls of Paris has the most gorgeous cover. Literally everything about that cover screams amazingness, and although it is dangerous to judge a book by its cover because it can end you feeling very misled at the end of the book.
Bad But I Read It Anyway
Basically the entire The Selection series lol. All I can say is that week I was extremely bored and so kind of just forced my way through the series. It wasn’t all bad, I was entertained when I wasn’t cringing, and that’s something. I wouldn’t recommend it, though.
How did your July reading go? Did you read any of these books and how did you find them?
I have a complicated relationship with The Selection. I genuinely enjoy the entire series, but it’s also so trashy. Honestly, I think it’s a pretty fun intro to dystopia for young teens, probably, but reading it as an adult was kind of weird sometimes.

This looks like a good reading month, at least in quantity! Hopefully you read some incredible books in August to make up for the not so great ones here💜 And I know what you mean about The Selection, it kinda reminds me of Twilight in how cringey yet weirdly entertaining it is😂

Yes, I agree. It was also weird for me, as a late teen 😂

Wow!! That’s a lot of books!! You’ve had an amazing summer, Ruqs!! I have read some of The Selection novellas, but not The Queen, The Favourite, or Celeste. Are they good??

18?! Whaaaaaat! I feel like that’s how many books I’ve read this past year haha! I completely agree with everything you said: The Prodigal Daughter really sounds great and that mixture is exactly the mixture I’ve always enjoyed, so I’m definitely going to look into that one! And again, you are right: The Lost Girls of Paris’s cover is GORGEOUS!!!! And we’ve already agreed on Selection haha!
Happy reading and most importantly: happy August!!
