W O W.
I did not expect this. Not at all. I kind of skim-read the blurb, looked at all the high ratings, flicked through some reviews, added it to my TBR, then saw it on OverDrive and thought I might as well download it and give it a try.
I had no idea what I was getting myself involved in. This book is an absolute masterpiece, and every detail – from the amazing writing, to the careful thought on the technicalities of the fantasy element, to the increasing suspense and the narrator’s personality and humour… is MAGNIFICENT.
Five stars does not do this book justice. I mean it.
If this isn’t hell, the devil is surely taking notes.
⚠️ Warning ⚠️ : do not enter this book without your brain turned on. I can assure you will get extremely confused and continue to be increasingly confused throughout the entire novel until you are utterly baffled at the ending. I learned this very quickly which meant for some rereading. You have to keep your wits about you and be in the right mindset to be able to handle all the craziness. But true me, it’s worth it.
I’ve called many books on this blog “rollercoasters”. But I’ve never meant it more with this one. This is the wildest mystery novel I have ever read and is the best. The author was very ambitious with this one, as there is so much depth to it in so many different aspects.
The book started off in a way that reminded me of The Maze Runner. Then it reminded me of that movie… I think it was a Tom Cruise movie… that I watched a few years back. Then it also reminded me of a movie my dad told me about. That’s just the beginning. Then it turned into something else entirely and I was left gawking at my iPad screen in bed looking absolutely wrecked.
There are so many different characters, all of them fully-fleshed out which is enough to make it interesting, Not to mention, the days aren’t all in order which can make it confusing (but also way more fascinating!) and the whole concept of another being living inside the hosts, and the way the memories from each of the hosts get more and more crowded and how the person has to deal with the desires of the host character it was in and having to control them and everything… on top of that dealing with the most baffling murder case that has its own twists and turns which could take up a whole 4 star book alone… this book is EVERYTHING (and more)!!!!
I’m not surprised this book took the author three years to write. In fact, I’m surprised it didn’t take him ten years to write it. How can anyone able to create such a huge scope of a story and be able to arrange into the triumph that this book is? I can imagine this book must have been tough to write. I, as the reader, was struggling to keep track of it all – so imagine the nightmare of the writer’s! There are what seems like thousands of aspects and shards to this book, that the writer somehow manages to tie all up into one with that hell of an ending.
The writing is also just amazing. I love it. I wasn’t surprised when I read at the back that he was a journalist. Even though it was his debut, I got the sense that he had been writing his whole life, and knew exactly how to phrase the words in a way to create such a vivid environment and such vivid characters and manipulate the structure in a way that it is just… gosh, I have no words.
It gets confusing. It gets baffling. It won’t stop you from reading. Half the time I was wondering what on earth was happening and questioning my own stupidity. Now after reading other reviews, I see I’m not alone. But either way, I enjoyed this to the absolute maximum and beyond.
Rule number one of this book: NOTHING IS WHAT IT SEEMS!!!
