This book blew my MIND. At first I started it, and I knew I would like it. I thought it would end up being a quick and interesting read that I would finish at least for the sake of my Goodreads goal and at most because I was enjoying it: maybe 3-3.5 stars… 4 stars if I’m lucky.
I had no idea I would be sucked in like I was sucked in. I had no idea I would be hit over the head with such a mind-twisting plot twist as that was, and to slowly be torn apart, shred by shred, as the ending drew nearer and the pages flew by quicker.
I finished this book in pretty much one sitting.
First and foremost, the writing is gorgeous. The way it glides through the book and seems to adapt to the surroundings of the storyline, increasing the affect of the shifts in atmosphere from lighter to darker makes the read so much more engaging – and spookier!
Some people said that the storyline was a bit predictable. HELLO, ALL MY PREDICTIONS WERE SHREDDED TO PIECES. I found this completely unpredictable: maybe I was too enraptured by the beautiful writing and spooky scenery to think properly and maybe other people aren’t as fooled? It’s still such a good read, though.
It was fun trying to guess the secrets, see who the sisters would turn up as, trying to figure out Bo, the way Penny’s mum is and Penny’s own secrets. All in all this is a jam-packed read and I could not stop turning those pages. It’s also pretty short which makes for something quick and enjoyable, although will leave you pondering about the ending.
This is not a light read, and I couldn’t read anything else for the rest of the day. It’s pretty dark, it deals with some dark stuff, such as witchcraft and possession. The way that the Swan sisters could come back and live for hundreds of years wasn’t really explained though, and I would have been interested to know more about the technicalities of it, considering the fact they weren’t witches was stressed.
Also, I had no idea this entire book was basically a romance in disguise. The Goodreads shelves don’t mention anything about romance, it’s classed as YA Fantasy > Paranormal > Witches. However, romance is a really big factor and if I had known that beforehand I probably wouldn’t have read it. Skipping explicit sexual content is your best friend though, if that’s what bothers you (as it does for me).
It isn’t exactly a happy ending, something I would caution some people to be weary about… if that’s the kind of thing that upsets you. I guess it is a happy ending… but not my version of what the happy ending in this book would look like.
