Mid-Year Freakout Book Tag – 2019

DON’T LIE TO ME IT IS NOT THE MIDDLE OF 2019 I’M NOT BELIEVING ANYONE. But I actually did this tag last year so check it out here because it makes me feel really crazy and weird going back and reading that post… I was in a completely different headspace and at a totally different point in my life and I just feel so, so, so… nostalgic but not nostalgic? Anyways, onto the tag πŸ™‚ And by the way… I know it’s just the name for the tag, but it very clearly defines my bookish situation right now because as you will soon see I AM BEHIND ON MY GOODREADS SCHEDULE.

So for some reason the questions in last year’s post (THAT FREAKS ME OUT WHY DOES THAT FREAK ME OUT… guys I feel old what is wrong with me) are different to the questions in the tag I saw on Kristin’s beautiful blog but I decided to go with Kristen’s because hers seem more fun.

Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2019

Alright looks like we’re going straight in with the baffling, mind-boggling, brain-bewildering question… ever. It’s confusing because how can you possibly be expected to pick one (1) book out of all the other *cough* many *cough* books I’ve read this year. But obviously I have to say Frankenstein – for many reasons but I’ve already written so much about it and I don’t want to be repeating myself to people who have already read those posts so click here.

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2019

The Wicked King. Duh. How is that even a question? Read my review here.

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To

Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly. That book looks like a mixture of wicked and magnificent and I’m so here for it (and that COVER, ladies and gents).

Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo!!! I am so pumped for this I cannot even describe to you how absolutely excited I am!!! Also… weird sidenote: those of you who’ve been reading me for a really long time (I doubt those people are still here but oh well) know I live in two places: Goodreads and OverDrive – and on my library OverDrive, I think there was some kind of glitch when I clicked on “new releases” because I WAS OPENED TO A PAGE FULL OF BOOKS THAT HAD NOT BEEN RELEASED YET! And believe it or not: ninth house was there… the AUDIOBOOK. And it was borrowed??? I think I screamed and shrieked and yelled at the same time, pressed “add to holds” and then the entire thing glitched. Let me tell you, my emotions were very much spent afterwards. Also that cover is EVERYTHING.

Biggest Disappointment

Ha. Ha. Ha. Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare… simply click here, here, here and here and you’ll know all about it.

Biggest Surprise

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein!!! I did not expect this book to be what it was – and that is: epic, astounding, enthralling… shook. See my review here.

Favourite New Author

Charlotte Bronte!! Now this author isn’t… erhm… exactly new – but she was new to me and after reading Jane Eyre I am so here for all her books!!

Newest Fictional Crush

LITERALLY NONE.

Newest Favourite Character

Elizabeth Frankenstein from The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein. She is one badass girl through and through.

Book That Made You Cry

Frankenstein!!

Book That Made You Happy

Emma by Jane Austen made me ridiculously happy!!

Favourite Book to Film Adaptation

OKAY so I recently broke this rule I used to always religiously abide by… twice. And that is reading the book before the movie. And, I broke this TWICE – both times on planes! Guys, planes lead me to desperation, and I watched both Crazy Rich Asians and Dumplin’ without having read the books and LOVED THEM BOTH. Now I’m not sure what to do… I want to read Dumpin’ but I think it might make for a weird experience considering I’ve already watched the movie?? and I’ve never done it before?? Ugh, help meeee.

Favourite Post You Have Done This Year

I HAVE A POST BUT IT WAS IN 2018. I can’t think of any other. I have so many posts they’ve all kind of blurred into one at this point… but if I have to choose it would probably be my last Top 5 Tuesday post on my Top *cough* 10 *cough* Favourite Books.

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

The Count of Monte Cristo!!! 😍😍😍

What Book You Need to Read by the End of the Year

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, obviously!!!

So technically this wasn’t a mid-year “freak out” tag because I didn’t freak out because none of the questions asked about my Goodreads goal πŸ™‚ Maybe I’ll make another post about my Goodreads goal… how has your year been so far – life-wise and bookish wise?

  1. The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite books of all time! Love it! And Frankenstein is amazing.

  2. seriously, how is 2019 half over already??? (time is just a construct.)

honestly I wasn’t a huge fan of Frankenstein, though the fact that I had to read it for class probably had something to do with that πŸ€” but of course it’s revolutionary for its genre and its time period, and I appreciate it as a cultural touchstone – just look at all the great things it’s inspired, not least of which is Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein (which was a fascinating read!).

I’ve been so excited for Ninth House, I would definitely have also freaked out if it popped up on my library OverDrive! I can’t see snakes on book covers the same way since I saw that callout post pointing out that they all use the exact same stock image, but objectively, the cover is gorgeous. and creepy. in the best way.

I haven’t read or seen Dumplin’ yet, but Crazy Rich Asians is still a pretty good read even if you’ve seen the movie! they managed to keep the tone and most of the best scenes, but they also changed the ending and left out some of the fun details so it’s still a different experience. and I’ve often found that if I watch a movie / show before reading the book, I actually just end up liking them both, whereas if I read the book first I end up picking the adaptation apart. but to each their own 😜

  3. Ahh I’m like 300 pages through and I love it so much already! Yes, Frankenstein is just amazing and if you loved it you should really read The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein – it’s an amazing retelling!

  4. I know!! and hahaha my friend always says “time is a construct” when I ask her, aghast, why she had another all nighter πŸ˜‚

haha I had to read it for a class I was taking too – and finished it in 2 days – getting well ahead of the rest of the class πŸ˜‚ Yes it really is an amazing premise – and The Dark Descennt of Elizabeth Frankenstein was just AMAZING.

I knowww! Wait what – they all use the same stock image?? What that changes the way I think about it too hahaha

Oh ok! I would highly recommend seeing Dumplin’ I was smiling so much on the plane I’m pretty sure people thought I was really weird. I want to read Crazy Rich Asians – but I’m not sure about the sexual content – is there a lot? And that’s good because although the movie was so entertaining – I found it overrated in another sense – I felt like a lot of the character development in the book were glossed over and so made for a kind of abrupt ending in my opinion πŸ™‚

  5. Nice! Count of Monte Cristo is such a good book! I know I’ve heard of The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein, I’ll have to see if my library has it and give it a look!
