First-Impressions: The Wicked King

Man, it’s great to be back in this world. It really is.

Since I’ve recently been immersed in the Shadowhunter books, specifically the Dark Artifices series, I hadn’t realised how much I’d missed this scheming, this originality, this clever element that many other books seem to lack in comparison.

I don’t love everything in this book, there are some random lines where I feel like Holly Black was trying to fit in some humour but it didn’t really work out and ended up going against, what I felt, was the way she had established the characters.

But honestly, I’m already 48% through and I’m really enjoying it. I love Jude’s POV, and the way we get insight into how she manages to keep things under her thumb one way or the other, and how clever she is. I love a smart book, and this is definitely one of them.

As I’m 48% through and the tension to a climax has begun, I don’t have that many concrete thoughts and feelings right now, I’m just going with the flow. So excited!
